A Life of Artistic Independence
Born in Koga, in what is now Ibaraki Prefecture, Seiko Okuhara was the daughter of a high-ranking samurai. To bypass legal restrictions that prevented women from leaving the Koga domain, she was adopted by her aunt in the neighboring Sekiyado Domain. Her classical education included Chinese history, literature, poetry, and philosophy. Moving to Edo-Tokyo around 1865, she became a leading artist and founded an art school. She was known for her distinctive lifestyle, often wearing masculine clothing and short hair, and she used the gender-neutral name Seiko rather than her birth name, Setsuko.
Her career flourished during the Meiji period, and she was recognized for her success within the primarily male literati school. She was a friend of the statesman Kido Takayoshi, with whom she and fellow artist Noguchi Shohin created gassaku—collaborative paintings featuring both text and imagery. In 1891, at the age of fifty-five, she retired to a countryside villa in Kumagaya, where she continued to paint, travel, and write poetry.
Style and Technique
Seiko Okuhara's work is categorized within the nanga literati school, showing influence from the Kanō school. Her artistic training involved copying funpon (pictorial models), a practice derived from Chinese literati traditions. Her technical approach evolved through two distinct phases:
One of her notable works is the 1907 scroll Beauty by Plum and Window, which combines painted images with poetic Chinese calligraphy. This piece depicts a young woman by an open window looking toward a plum blossom tree, creating a sense of duality between intimacy and secrecy.
