A Life in Haarlem

Leendert van der Cooghen lived his life within the walls of Haarlem. Born in 1632 to a Flemish flax merchant and a woman from the well-to-do van Beresteyn family, he moved through the city with the quiet ease of one who possessed independent means. He did not need to seek commissions or labor for a living, which allowed him to pursue his interests on his own terms. His presence in the local Catholic militia suggests a man rooted in the specific social fabric of his home, even as he shared studios and friendships with other local painters like Cornelis Bega.

His hands were trained by others. There is evidence of time spent under Jacob Jordaens, perhaps in Antwerp or during the latter's stay in the Dutch Republic. This connection brought a certain weight to his figures. In 1652, he was admitted to the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke, a formal recognition of his skill among his peers. He remained in his family home, Ter Goes, alongside his sister Catharina, until his death in 1681.

The Marks on Paper and Canvas

While only a few paintings have survived, the traces he left on paper are more numerous. His drawings often carry the weight of a personal record, frequently noting the exact day, month, and year of their creation. These works show a man observing the world closely. He captured faces—the head of a boy, a seated old man, or a woman in profile—with a steady, observant hand. Some of these studies were made using black and white chalk on blue-grey paper, a choice that lends a specific depth to the shadows he rendered.

His printmaking was equally focused. Between 1664 and 1666, he produced about ten etchings. These small works, such as his portrait of a girl with braided hair, show a transparent and free style. His paintings, though few, addressed heavy themes. In The Doubting Thomas, painted in 1654, the influence of Jordaens is visible in the scale of the figures. He also turned to stories from literature, such as the abduction of Preciosa, using the contrast of skin tones to tell a story of movement and encounter.

A Quiet Legacy

The output of Leendert van der Cooghen was small, shaped by his status as an amateur artist who painted for pleasure rather than profit. He did not seek to fill galleries with large-scale works, but instead left behind a collection of intimate observations. His drawings and etchings remain in collections such as the Rijksmuseum, the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Art, where they continue to show the specific way he saw his contemporaries.

His work is characterized by:

  • Drawings that often serve as dated personal records.
  • Etchings that utilize a light, transparent technique.
  • Paintings that draw from religious narratives and popular novellas.
  • A focus on portraiture and genre pieces within the Haarlem circle.
