1899 - 1942

核心信息

Early Life, Family and Training

Jean Adler was born in Paris on September 30, 1899. He grew up within a family that understood the weight of a brush; his uncle, Jules Adler, was a painter himself. This connection to the craft was part of the air he breathed during his childhood in the city. By 1919, he had entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris to begin his formal study of painting and sculpture.

His training was shaped by several hands. He studied under Ernest Laurent and Louis-François Biloul, and he also learned from his uncle, Jules Adler. His education continued in the atelier of Fernand Cormon. These years were spent learning the mechanics of form and the discipline required for both sculpture and painting. He eventually became an honor graduate of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, a recognition of the technical skill he had developed through his studies.

Artistic Career and Exhibitions

His professional path moved through the established circles of the Parisian art scene. In 1923, he traveled to Morocco on a scholarship, a period that preceded his return to the city's formal exhibition spaces. By 1928, he held his first solo exhibition in Paris, marking a significant moment in his development as a painter and sculptor.

His presence in the major salons was steady. He showed his work at the Salon des artistes français, where he received an honorable mention. His canvases and sculptures also appeared in the Salon des indépendants, the Salon d'automne, and the Salon des Tuileries. These exhibitions placed his work alongside the contemporary output of his era, moving between the structured settings of the official salons and the more independent venues.

Artistic Style and Subject Matter

His work often focused on the quiet arrangements of still lifes, the contours of nudes, and the shifting light of landscapes. He worked primarily with oil and paper, capturing the textures of his subjects through these mediums. There is a sense of observation in his sketches, particularly when he turned his attention to the everyday life of Paris. He spent time documenting the atmosphere of specific locations, such as the courtyard of a boys' school in the 13th arrondissement, seen in his sketch titled Farandole.

In other pieces, he looked at the physical presence of people engaged in their daily routines. His sketch Masculine Labor, also set at the school in the rue Küss, suggests an interest in the movement and weight of the human form within a specific environment. These studies show a preference for capturing a moment of activity or a particular slice of urban life. His compositions were often tied to the spaces he inhabited, whether they were the streets of Paris or the landscapes he encountered during his travels.

Later Years and Death

The final years of Jean Adler’s life were marked by the sudden and violent disruptions of the Second World War. On December 12, 1941, the Gestapo arrested him and his brother. This arrest led to his internment at Compiègne, and he was later moved to Drancy. These movements were the precursors to his final deportation.

On March 27, 1942, he was included in convoy no 1, the first transport to be sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He did not survive the camp. He died at Auschwitz on April 12, 1942.
