The Life and Art of Einar Jolin
Einar Jolin was a Swedish painter known for his decorative and slightly naïve Expressionist style. Born in Stockholm, he studied at Konstfack and the Konstnärsförbundets målarskola. Between 1908 and 1914, Jolin traveled to Paris to study at Henri Matisse's Académie Matisse alongside Isaac Grünewald. During his time in France, he developed a sense for a stylish line combined with bright, clean colors, often painting models and still lifes. He also created his earliest landscapes during a visit to the south of France in 1911.
Jolin's work frequently featured portraits, still lifes, and cityscapes, particularly views of Stockholm. His technique involved delicate brush strokes and light colors, primarily using oils and watercolors. His style was influenced by Oriental art, specifically Chinese and Japanese art, which contributed to his use of simplified motifs and clear contours. In later years, his subjects often included Chinoiserie settings and still lifes featuring Oriental porcelain.

Jolin's travels took him to various locations, including Africa, India, the West Indies, Spain, Italy, and North Africa, with a particular fondness for the Mediterranean and the island of Capri. In 1954, he toured the United States with an exhibition that opened at Galerie St. Etienne in New York.
