The Life and Career of Adolf Ziegler
Adolf Ziegler was a German painter and politician. Born in Bremen to a family of architects, he studied at the Weimar Academy under Max Doerner and later attended classes by Angelo Jank at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. While his early works exhibited modernist forms and he was once considered an admirer of Franz Marc, his style transitioned into a representational and realistic approach during the 1920s.
As a prominent figure in the Nazi Party, Ziegler held several administrative roles, including President of the Prussian Academy of Arts and President of the Reich Chamber for the Visual Arts. He was tasked with overseeing the removal of what were described as "degenerate art," leading a commission that seized works by artists such as Max Beckmann and Emil Nolde for the Degenerate Art exhibition in Munich. His own paintings, including The Four Elements and Judgement of Paris, were featured in the Great German Art Exhibitions.
Artistic Style and Later Years
Ziegler was known for a technically accomplished style that included floral compositions, genre paintings, portraits, and allegorical paintings inspired by Greek mythology. He also produced numerous female nudes depicting ideal figures. His work earned him the nickname Meister des Deutschen Schamhaares.
Following his arrest by the Gestapo and imprisonment in the Dachau concentration camp, Ziegler was released by order of Hitler to retire. After the war, he was unable to revive his career due to his close associations with the Nazi regime. He lived in the village of Varnhalt near Baden-Baden until his death.
