Peter Leonard Folkes (3 November 1923 – 7 January 2019) was an English painter whose artistic journey spanned sixty years, primarily focused on capturing the essence of Southampton and its surrounding environs. Born in Beaminster, Dorset, he possessed a profound connection to his region, which profoundly shaped his distinctive style and subject matter—a blend of meticulous realism and subtle modernist experimentation. His career began with formal training at the West of England College of Art in Bristol during World War II, interrupted but not diminished by military service where he served as a draughtsman in the Signal Corps, earning recognition for his dedication.- Early Influences & Education: Folkes’s artistic sensibilities were nurtured by classical Renaissance ideals and developed further through exposure to diverse influences during his formative years.
