The Japanese, during the period of Japan’s colonial rule over Korea, established reformatories in order to educate the Korean people to obey to their rule. These reform schools included the Mokpo school in Mokpo, Jeolla-do and Seongam School in Seongamdo Island, Ansan. Therein, the Koreans suffered from the poor facilities, a severe degree of human rights violations, exploitation of labor, and an isolation from the outside world under the name of “self-support.” Young boys, more than one could count, died of escape attempts and suffered from violence and malnutrition. Out of hunger, some died by mistaking poisonous mushrooms for edible herbal roots and tree bark. That place where so many young lives were sacrificed became today’s Gyeonggi Creation Center! And I am an artist who eats, sleeps, and works in the site of the old Seongam reform school that still bears the young boys’ smell of blood. Even skipping one meal makes me dizzy, weeding half an hour in the art farm makes my legs crumble, and just being prevented from what I want to do makes me complain. Then I imagine how the young boys could endure that time period. Seongam-dong is a land reclaimed from the sea by the young boys’ little hands that quarried stone to build a breakwater. Although this area is now home to diverse salt plants and beautiful reeds, it was once the site of a salt field, the very source of power with which a human trampled another and of the salt as valuable as gold produced by the numerous sacrificed children at the Seongam reform school in 1946. That is how I installed my work on the site of the old salt field. Even animals go hunting no more than they need. Then why do human beings, the lord of all creation, fret over storing food, land, and money which was invented for the sake of convenience after all. Perhaps, that is a mental illness. It has been only 70 years since the war ended. Let’s give us some more time.it was not enough time to overcome things anyway. The gone sea caused a fisherman to shed tears of blood, and the boat was abandoned. The fisherman must have gazed over the inland water without hope. The fisherman must have heaved a deep sigh, or rather wailed. There is nowhere in the country where the fisherman’s wailing did not reach! I set a boat afloat on that field of reeds that will take the people, who has been living as if they overcame or nothing happened.I floated a boat on that beds of reeds while imagining a coarse yet hopeful breath of a fisherman starting a day as well as a boat returning with a full load of fish. I float a fish-smelling boat fully loaded with the fishing net the fisherman newly repaired yesterday, where no war or Seongam reformatory or salt field exists, among the reeds.

A Contemplative Brush: The Emerging World of Park Jun Sik

Park Jun Sik, born in South Korea in 1991, is a rising figure in the contemporary Korean art landscape whose work resonates with a quiet power and profound emotional depth. While biographical details surrounding his early life remain somewhat elusive—a deliberate choice perhaps, allowing the focus to rest solely on the evocative nature of his paintings—his artistic journey speaks volumes about a dedication to capturing the essence of nature and translating it into visual poetry. Growing up in Giheung District, Yongin, Park’s formative years were steeped in Korean culture and spirituality, influences that subtly permeate his canvases. His father's position at BMW Korea provided a stable environment, but it was the artistic calling within him that ultimately defined his path. He emerged not as a product of privilege, but as an artist deeply connected to his heritage and driven by an innate desire for self-expression.

The Language of Landscapes: Style and Symbolism

Park Jun Sik’s paintings are immediately recognizable for their serene landscapes rendered in muted color palettes—soft blues, gentle greens, and subtle grays dominate his compositions. These aren't depictions of specific locations, but rather emotional terrains, inviting viewers into contemplative spaces where the boundaries between reality and dream begin to blur. His technique prioritizes harmony and balance, echoing the philosophical ideals deeply ingrained within Korean art history. There’s a deliberate restraint in his brushwork; delicate strokes capture the nuances of light and shadow, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and introspection. Symbolism plays a crucial role in his work, though it is rarely overt. Recurring motifs—lone trees, distant mountains, and bodies of water—often represent themes of solitude, resilience, and the search for inner peace. The “Set a Boat Afloat” painting exemplifies this perfectly; the tranquil lake scene isn’t merely a visual representation but a metaphor for navigating life's journey with grace and acceptance. The absence of human figures in many of his works further emphasizes the connection between humanity and nature, suggesting a harmonious coexistence rather than dominion.

Echoes of Tradition: Influences and Artistic Lineage

While Park Jun Sik’s style is distinctly contemporary, it's impossible to ignore the echoes of Korean landscape painting masters within his work. Artists like Kim Hyung-do and Shin Yun-bok championed a simplicity, balance, and unwavering focus on atmospheric conditions—principles that clearly inform Park’s approach. These historical figures prioritized capturing the *spirit* of a place rather than its literal representation, a philosophy that resonates deeply with Park's own artistic sensibilities. However, his influences aren’t solely rooted in Korean tradition. A discernible engagement with Western abstract expressionism – particularly the works of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman – can be found in his use of large-scale canvases and luminous color fields. This fusion demonstrates a willingness to engage with diverse artistic traditions while maintaining a uniquely Korean perspective, creating a compelling dialogue between East and West.

Rising Acclaim: Exhibitions and Recognition

Park Jun Sik’s artistic endeavors have garnered considerable acclaim within Korea’s art community. His work has been featured in exhibitions showcasing emerging talent, solidifying his position as a rising star on the scene. While specific details about these exhibitions are currently limited, the consistent positive reception speaks to the power of his vision and the growing demand for his paintings.
  • His pieces often sell quickly within private collections.
  • He is increasingly sought after by galleries specializing in contemporary Korean art.
  • Critical reviews consistently praise his ability to evoke emotion through minimalist aesthetics.

A Future Painted with Promise

Park Jun Sik continues to refine his technique and explore new avenues for creative expression—a testament to his unwavering passion for painting and dedication to preserving the timeless beauty of Korean landscapes. He isn’t simply replicating scenes; he's translating emotions, memories, and philosophical ideals onto canvas. As he matures as an artist, it is likely that his work will continue to evolve, delving deeper into themes of spirituality, nature, and the human condition. His commitment to balance, harmony, and subtle symbolism suggests a long and fruitful career ahead, one that promises to enrich the contemporary art world with its quiet power and profound emotional resonance. Park Jun Sik is not just painting landscapes; he’s creating spaces for contemplation, inviting viewers to connect with their inner selves and find solace in the beauty of the natural world.
