Born in the vibrant heart of Belfast on January 15, 1902, Olive Henry emerged as a singular force in the twentieth-century Northern Irish art scene. As the daughter of tea merchant George Adams Henry, her upbringing in Belfast provided a foundation of stability that allowed her to pursue an expansive artistic education. After attending Victoria College, she sought further refinement through night classes at the Belfast School of Art, a period of study that would eventually lead her toward a career defined by both technical mastery and profound creative vision.
The trajectory of Henry’s career was irrevocably altered by a chance encounter in the autumn of 1919. A visit to Victoria College by the owner of Clokey Stained Glass Studios resulted in an apprenticeship that would span over five decades. Within the luminous atmosphere of the glass studios, Henry honed a skill set that made her a rarity in her era; she is believed to have been the only female stained glass artist working in Northern Ireland during the first half of the twentieth century.
