“In 1933 in Spain, Jose Puig Llobera established Belenes Puig S.L., a family-owned company famous for its Nativity figures (belenes, the Spanish word for Bethlehem, can also refer to a Nativity scene). The company is still family owned, with the third generation operating the business. The figures are handcrafted from clay molds, painted, and dressed with stiffened fabrics. These Puig Nativity figures have been influenced by an elaborate Nativity scene created by Francisco Salzillo between 1776 and 1783 for the Murcian nobleman Jesualdo Riquelme y Fontes. Salzillo was a noted Baroque sculptor of religious figures in polychromed wood. His Nativity includes hundreds of pieces and is located in Murcia, Spain, in the museum that bears his name: Museo Salzillo.” (Ed and Kirsten Gyllenhaal, label text, “World Nativities 2020”)

About Belenes Puig S.L.: A Legacy of Nativity Sculpture

Established in 1933 by Jose Puig Llobera, Belenes Puig S.L. stands as a testament to enduring tradition and artistic craftsmanship within the Spanish nativity scene (belenes) industry. Located in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires, Alicante Province, Spain, this family-owned company has navigated decades of history while maintaining its core mission: creating exceptional nativity figures that honor both artistry and cultural heritage.

  • Early Beginnings: Jose Puig Llobera’s vision stemmed from a deep appreciation for the centuries-old tradition of belenes in Spain, particularly influenced by the monumental Nativity sculpture created by Francisco Salzillo between 1776 and 1783 for Jesualdo Riquelme y Fontes. Salzillo's masterpiece served as an inspiration for Puig’s artistic endeavors.
  • Handcrafted Excellence: Belenes Puig S.L.’s distinctive approach involves meticulous handcrafting using clay molds, followed by careful painting and dressing with stiffened fabrics—techniques rooted in centuries of sculptural tradition.
  • Influence of Salzillo's Nativity: The company’s artistic style reflects the grandeur and detail of Salzillo’s iconic Nativity scene, emphasizing realism and conveying profound spiritual meaning.

Throughout its history, Belenes Puig S.L. has consistently prioritized quality and innovation. They have embraced new technologies while upholding the values of their founding father—a dedication to preserving artistic heritage alongside embracing contemporary aesthetics.

Exploring Artistic Style & Technique

Belenes Puig S.L.’s sculptures are characterized by a remarkable blend of realism and symbolic representation, mirroring the spirit of Baroque art. The company’s artisans skillfully employ traditional sculpting methods, utilizing clay molds to achieve intricate forms and textures. Precise painting techniques bring out the luminosity and depth of color, enhancing the visual impact of each figurine.

  • Clay Modeling: Skilled sculptors meticulously shape clay into detailed representations of biblical figures—Mary, Joseph, Jesus, angels, shepherds, and wise men—capturing expressions and postures that convey emotion.
  • Painting Techniques: Artists apply layers of pigment to the sculpted figurines, utilizing glazing techniques to achieve subtle tonal variations and luminous effects reminiscent of Baroque painting.
  • Fabric Dressing: The finished sculptures are adorned with stiffened fabrics—linen or burlap—to create realistic drapery that adds dimension and texture to the figures.

These artistic choices reflect a commitment to honoring both tradition and innovation, ensuring that Belenes Puig S.L.’s nativity figures continue to inspire awe and convey spiritual significance for generations to come.
