The Front Staircase with Cleopatra An oil painting, painted by hand for you alone

A Surreal Ascent: Unpacking Aleksei Krivoshlykov’s “The Front Staircase with Cleopatra”

Aleksei Krivoshlykov's "The Front Staircase with Cleopatra" isn’t merely a painting; it’s an invitation into a dreamscape, a collision of Pop Art vibrancy and unsettling surrealism. Born in Moscow in 1979, Krivoshlykov has cultivated a distinctive artistic voice—one that blends the meticulous detail of realism with deliberately skewed perspectives and symbolic layering. This particular work, created around 2020, immediately commands attention with its bold composition: a dramatic red carpet dramatically ascending towards a shadowed archway, creating an immediate sense of both allure and mystery.

The painting’s style is undeniably rooted in Pop Art's embrace of color and simplified forms, yet Krivoshlykov elevates it through a distinctly unsettling quality. The colors are unapologetically bright – the scarlet carpet practically vibrates against the cool grays and blues of the surrounding walls—but they’re deployed with an almost theatrical intensity. Thick brushstrokes, particularly evident on the carpet and architectural elements, lend a tactile quality to the image, suggesting a surface that begs to be touched, explored. The geometric shapes—the archway, the steps, even the rectangular blocks forming the wall – create a sense of order within this otherwise chaotic scene, hinting at an underlying structure beneath the dreamlike surface.

Symbolism and Narrative

The immediate visual impact is dominated by the red carpet itself. Red has long been associated with passion, power, and even danger—a potent symbol that immediately draws the viewer’s eye. Leading towards the dark archway, it suggests a path, an entrance to something unknown. The presence of Cleopatra, though not explicitly depicted, is powerfully implied through the setting – a grand, almost theatrical space reminiscent of ancient Egypt. This subtle reference elevates the painting beyond a simple depiction of architecture; it becomes a meditation on power, legacy, and perhaps even the seductive allure of the past.

The dark archway itself acts as a visual anchor, drawing the eye into shadow and uncertainty. It’s not an inviting portal but rather a threshold—a point of no return. The surrounding walls, rendered in muted tones, further enhance this sense of foreboding, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere despite the expansive scale of the scene. The cobblestone pavement at the base adds a grounding element, connecting the fantastical architecture to a more tangible reality, yet even here, the perspective is flattened, contributing to the overall dreamlike quality.

Technique and Artistic Influences

Krivoshlykov’s technique is characterized by its deliberate roughness. The visible brushstrokes aren't smoothed out; they are integral to the painting’s expressive power. This impasto effect adds depth and texture, inviting close examination of the surface. His work clearly draws inspiration from a range of sources, including the realism of Ilya Repin—particularly his ability to capture human emotion with striking detail—and the unsettling narratives of Konstantin Somov, known for his satirical depictions of Russian society. The influence of Pop Art is undeniable in the bold color palette and simplified forms, but Krivoshlykov imbues these elements with a distinctly personal vision.
