Identification of the Dead Game Painting

The oil on canvas painting titled Dead Game was executed by the Dutch artist Cornelis Lelienbergh. This specific work dates to 1657. The composition measures 112 x 93 cm in size.

Cornelis Lelienbergh, born in The Hague, Netherlands, produced this still life during the seventeenth century. The piece depicts various forms of dead game, including birds and animals, arranged within a dark setting. The physical dimensions of the canvas are 112 x 93 cm.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition centers on a variety of dead game arranged within the frame. This collection includes several birds, such as ducks, geese, and chickens, alongside other animals. The arrangement is dense, with some birds suspended from ropes while others appear to be held by the weight of neighboring creatures. Metal knives are positioned within the scene, their blades visible among the feathers and forms. These elements are set against a dark, undifferentiated background that provides a stark contrast to the subjects.

The placement of the animals creates a complex network of overlapping shapes and textures. The feathers of the ducks and geese are rendered with attention to their physical structure. Light falls across the carcasses, defining the contours of the birds and the sharp edges of the knives. The dark backdrop limits the depth of the space, pushing the subjects toward the viewer and emphasizing the physical presence of the game. The arrangement of the various animals and tools creates a balanced but crowded visual field.

Artistic Style and Technique

Cornelis Van Lelienbergh employs the chiaroscuro technique to define the physical presence of the subjects. This method utilizes strong contrasts between light and dark to establish a sense of volume and depth within the composition. The light source is directed to highlight the specific textures and fine details of the dead game. Through this controlled lighting, the artist renders the individual feathers and the surface qualities of the animals with meticulous precision.

The composition relies on a careful arrangement of elements to achieve a balanced and harmonious whole. Each bird and animal is positioned to contribute to the overall structure of the scene. The dark background provides a stark contrast that emphasizes the forms of the game, ensuring that the focus remains on the textures of the plumage and the anatomical details of the subjects. This systematic approach to light and placement creates a structured visual order throughout the work.
