A life between Maastricht and Rome
Carel de Vogelaer began his days in Maastricht, born to the painter Pieter de Vogelaer. His early years were shaped by the studio environment of his father, where the foundations of his craft were laid alongside his brothers. By 1668, he had left the Netherlands, moving through France and visiting Lyon before finding his way to Rome around 1671. This movement from the North to the heart of Italy changed the course of his work.
In Rome, he became part of a specific circle of artists known as the Bentvueghels. Upon joining this society in 1675, he took the nickname Distelbloem, or Thistle flower. He often tucked a small thistle into his compositions, using the plant as a quiet, coded signature. To those in Italy, he was frequently called Carlo dei Fiori, a name that reflected the subject of his canvases.
The language of flowers
His work focused on the arrangement of petals and stems. He built elaborate Baroque flower pieces, often working with oil on canvas to capture the weight of a bloom or the texture of a leaf. While he is known for these floral arrangements, he also painted fruit and game, though fewer of those works remain. His style was heavily shaped by his time in the studio of Carlo Maratti, whose influence can be seen in the way he handled large-scale floral themes.
He did not always work alone. Many of his flower pieces featured figures or landscapes that were painted in by other hands. He maintained close ties with fellow painters like Luigi Garzi and Giovanni Battista Gaulli, often collaborating on works where different specialists contributed their specific strengths. This practice of shared creation was a common rhythm in his professional life.
Final years in the Eternal City
The streets of Rome provided the backdrop for his later years. He lived in the Via Margutta during the mid-1680s, sharing a house with the Flemish painter Anthoni Schoonjans, before moving to the Via del Babuino by 1686. His presence in the city was marked by the patronage of collectors such as Francesco Montioni and the Marchese Niccolò Maria Pallavicini.
His life in Rome ended at the age of 42. He died on 8 August 1695, leaving behind a body of work that remains tied to the botanical precision and the heavy, dramatic light of the seventeenth century. His sister, Elisabeth, remained as his sole heir following his death.
