jean-étienne liotard, Cenevre doğumlu ünlü bir ressam, sanat eksperi ve sanat tüccarı olarak 22 Aralık 1702 tarihinde İsviçre'nin Cenevre kentinde dünyaya geldi. Fransız Protestan olan ebeveynleri, 1685 yılından sonra Cenevre'ye sığınmıştı. Liotard'ın sanatsal yolculuğu, emaye ve minyatür çalışmalarını büyük bir ustalıkla taklit ettiği profesörler Daniel Gardelle ve Petitot'nun rehberliğinde şekillendi.sanatsıl kariyer
Liotard'ın gerçekleştirdiği seyahatler onu Paris, Roma, İstanbul ve Viyana gibi çeşitli Avrupa başkentlerine taşıdı; bu şehirlerde portreleri büyük bir talep görüyordu. 1725 yılında Paris'te jean-baptiste massé ve françois lemoyne'un yanında eğitim aldı.
