Frederick Goodall, a cornerstone of Victorian genre painting, was born in London on September 17, 1822, the second son of Edward Goodall, a skilled steel line engraver. His formative years were shaped by a rigorous education at Wellington Road Academy, fostering an unwavering dedication to artistic pursuits that would define his entire career.

Goodall’s artistic journey commenced with a remarkable commission for Isambard Brunel – six watercolor paintings depicting the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Remarkably, he secured membership into the Royal Academy at just sixteen years old, showcasing prodigious talent from an early age. His debut oil painting garnered a prestigious silver medal from the Society of Arts, establishing him as a rising star within the artistic community.
Between 1838 and 1859, Goodall’s canvases graced the Royal Academy walls twenty-seven times, cementing his reputation for meticulous observation and masterful technique. This prolific output reflected not only his personal ambition but also a deep engagement with the prevailing aesthetic sensibilities of the era.

A pivotal moment in Goodall's artistic development arrived in 1858 and 1870 when he embarked on an expedition to Egypt. Driven by an ardent desire for authenticity, he immersed himself in Bedouin culture, meticulously documenting daily life – a practice that directly informed his paintings. He returned with sheep and goats from Egypt, ensuring the accuracy of his depictions and underlining his commitment to capturing genuine visual experience.
The Egyptian theme became a dominant force in Goodall’s oeuvre, resulting in 170 canvases exhibited at the Royal Academy over four decades. This fascination stemmed from an appreciation for the grandeur of ancient civilization and its influence on artistic imagination.

Frederick married Anne Thomson, daughter of engraver James Thomson, in 1846, forging a familial bond that extended beyond his own children – Frederick Trevelyan and Howard Goodall. Following Anne’s untimely passing in 1869, he found solace in companionship with artist Alice May Tarry, whom he wed in 1872.
Goodall's artistic legacy resides not merely in the beauty of his paintings but also in their contribution to establishing Impressionism within British art.
