A Life Rooted in Color and Craft

Charles Vincent Lamb began his life in Portadown, County Armagh, as the son of a painter and decorator. His early years were shaped by the practicalities of craft, learning the trade through an apprenticeship with his father, John Lamb. This foundation in manual skill stayed with him throughout his career. Before he was a celebrated painter, he was a housepainter who earned a gold medal as Housepainter of the Year in 1913. He spent his evenings studying life drawing at the Belfast School of Art, driven by a quiet determination to move beyond the decorative into the fine arts.

In 1917, a teaching scholarship brought him to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. It was here that his technical abilities met new influences, as he studied under Seán Keating. This period of formal education provided the tools for a style that would eventually balance academic realism with a more modern, expressive touch. His brushwork often featured a controlled yet broad application, using restrained impasto to build texture on the canvas.

The Spirit of Connemara

A profound shift occurred in 1921 when Lamb first visited Carraroe, a remote Irish-speaking region in Connemara. This encounter with the West of Ireland changed his focus. He found what he described as a national essence in the landscapes and the people of the Gaeltacht. The rugged beauty of the coast and the rhythms of local life became his primary subjects. By 1935, he had built a cottage in Carraroe, making the area his permanent home and establishing a summer painting school to share his knowledge.

His work often centered on the dignity of the people living in these coastal communities. He painted fishing families, Aran Islanders, and those engaged in the heavy labor of the land. Whether depicting a woman knitting or the toil of a turf cutter, he approached his subjects with a sense of heroism. His paintings captured a way of life that felt under threat from the encroaching modern world, documenting traditions through warm-toned oils and a focus on the changing light of the Connemara landscape.

Recognition and Legacy

Lamb’s reputation grew far beyond the borders of Ireland. He exhibited his work in major cities including London, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. His professional standing was marked by several honors, such as being elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1938 and becoming an Associate of the Royal Ulster Academy. He also helped found the Society of Dublin Painters, showing his commitment to the local artistic community.

Today, his paintings are held in significant collections that preserve the visual history of the Irish West. His work can be found in:
