Antonio López García nació en Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, España, el 6 de enero de 1936, pocos meses antes del inicio de la Guerra Civil Española que estalló el 17 de julio con el levantamiento militar. La guerra terminó el 1 de abril de 1939, dando paso a una dictadura militar liderada por Francisco Franco que duraría treinta y siete años. Sin embargo, Antonio recuerda su infancia en el pueblo como feliz y pacífica. Comenzó su formación artística en Tomelloso con su tío Antonio López Torres, pintor paisajista local, quien reconoció y nutrió su talento artístico desde temprana edad ofreciéndole sus primeros lecciones. En octubre de ese mismo año, su tío convenció a sus padres de dejarle viajar a Madrid para prepararse para el examen de ingreso en la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Con este objetivo en mente, Antonio estudió dibujo después de esculturas; observando cuidadosamente los moldes en el Museo Nacional Centro Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía y asistiendo a las clases magistrales de la Escuela Profesional de Diseño Gráfico y Diseño Imagen donde fue alumno de varios profesores destacados. Desde entonces, conoció a aquellos que serían sus amigos más cercanos y futuros colaboradores profesionales. Estos fueron los hermanos pintores Julio y Francisco López Hernández, Joaquín Ramo, Enrique Gran y Lucio Muñoz, entre otros. Más tarde, María Moreno se convirtió en su esposa en 1961. Antes de finalizar sus estudios en San Fernando en 1955, participó en una exposición colectiva organizada por la Escuela Profesional de Diseño Gráfico y Diseño Imagen donde fue alumno de varios profesores destacados. En junio de ese mismo año, obtuvo una beca otorgada por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional que utilizó para viajar a Grecia acompañado nuevamente por Francisco López Hernández, quien había estudiado escultura en París. Allí ambos realizaron un viaje por Italia donde estudiaron la pintura italiana del Renacimiento bajo la guía de profesores especializados.
