A Life Between Pages and Brushes Elizabeth Otis Marshall Dannelly lived through the shifting landscapes of the nineteenth-century American South. Born in Monticello, Georgia, on June 13, 1838, her early years were shaped by the quiet surroundings of Oxford, Georgia, where her father, Jackson Marshall, had moved. Her education took her from Charleston, South Carolina, to Madison Female College, where she graduated in July 1855. Followin
g her studies, she traveled to New York City for a year to study painting, a period that brought her closer to the technical foundations of the craft. In September 1862, she married Dr. Francis Olin Dannelly. As her husband served as a surgeon in the Confederate States Army, her life moved through Richmond, Virginia, and Columbia, South Carolina.
