It was within this spirited company that he adopted the nickname "Bontekraay," which translates to The Hooded Crow.
By 1672, he had returned to The Hague, where he would remain until his death in 1688. He became an active figure in the local art community, helping to shape its formal structures. He was among the forty-eight men who signed the founding charter of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague. His talent for capturing the essence of a family was perhaps most clearly realized in his 1679 creation, the Allegorizing Group Portrait of the Children of Diederic . This ambitious composition, which depicts the children of Diederic Pietersz van Leyden van Leeuwen and Alida Paets, uses a garden setting and classical motifs to weave a narrative of lineage and legacy. It is a work of great detail, where each child is assigned a symbolic attribute, from a globe to a sword, to tell their story. This significant piece remains preserved today within the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
