The Collector and the Creator

To understand Margaretha Cornelia Boellaard is to look past the surface of nineteenth-century Dutch amateurism. Born in Utrecht in 1795, she was far more than a dilettante practicing a polite hobby. While her social standing as the daughter of Johan Diderick Boellaard provided the means, her technical training suggests a rigorous pursuit of skill. She studied under Christiaan van Geelen sr. and jr., portrait specialists who instilled in her a command over the human form. Her time at the Rijksacademische in Amsterdam in 1825 and her work with landscape painter Cornelis van Hardenbergh moved her beyond simple sketches into the realm of lithography and painting.

Her output focused on genre scenes and portraits, works that required a precise eye for detail. In 1834, she secured a prize from Academie Minerva in Groningen for a depiction of a young girl composing a bouquet. This was not merely a decorative exercise; it was a demonstration of technical competence that earned her recognition in exhibitions across Amsterdam, Groningen, and Nijmegen between 1826 and 1843.

A Shift from Brush to Paper

The trajectory of Boellaard’s career took a sharp turn when physical ailments, specifically issues with her eyesight, prevented her from continuing her active painting. This transition did not end her engagement with art; it redirected it toward the acquisition of works. She became an astute collector, focusing on drawings and graphics by both old masters and contemporary figures. Her method was systematic. She utilized a network of collectors and enthusiasts to build a collection that included pieces worthy of scrutiny by the era's leading experts.

Her eye for quality led her to participate in art reviews at prestigious venues such as:

  • Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam
  • Pulchri-Studio in The Hague
  • Genootschap Kunstliefde in Utrecht

She did not merely hoard objects; she actively engaged with the art community, even delivering a lecture at Genootschap Pictura in Dordrecht in 1871 regarding the modern drawings within her possession.

The Weight of Her Legacy

Boellaard’s impact is measured by what she left behind in Utrecht. Upon her death in 1872, her estate provided the foundation for much of the local art infrastructure. She bequeathed a significant capital and her house at Oudegracht nr. 35 to Genootschap Kunstliefde. This contribution was substantial enough that the society eventually established Museum Kunstliefde within that very building in 1905. Her name remains attached to the Boellaard-Fonds, a fund created to support visual artists, and the Boellaardprijs, an annual award for excellence in art.

Her life ended as it was lived: deeply embedded in the fabric of Utrecht's cultural institutions. She was buried in the Soestbergen cemetery in a grave vault she had established herself in 1840. Her epitaph, “Zij wilde het goede” (She sought the good), serves as a final, blunt statement of her character and her commitment to the preservation of art.
