Identification of the Self Portrait by William Page

The gaze of the artist meets the viewer in this Self Portrait by William Page. This oil on canvas captures the man in a moment of quiet, professional stillness. The work emerges from the year 1860, a period when the artist was establishing his presence through a mastery of form and light. Page, who lived from 1811 to 1885, presents himself here with a sense of purpose that transcends a mere likeness.

Measuring 149.9 x 91.4 cm, the painting occupies a significant space, commanding attention through its scale and the weight of its subject. The physical presence of the canvas carries the marks of Page's hand, revealing the texture of the medium as it builds the figure of the man. Every brushstroke contributes to the reality of the sitter, grounding him in a space that feels both immediate and permanent.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

A middle-aged man occupies the center of the frame, captured in a full-length view that commands the space. He stands in a three-quarter pose, his body angled slightly while his gaze drifts off-canvas to his right. This distant look lends him a contemplative air, as if his thoughts have wandered beyond the immediate surroundings. His hair and well-groomed, reddish-brown beard catch the light, echoing the warm tones of the background. Behind him, a textured orange backdrop dominates the upper half of the composition, creating a sense of organic unity between the man and the space he inhabits.

The tools of his craft are held firmly, marking his identity through the objects in his hands. In his left hand, he grips two long, slender implements, perhaps brushes or styluses, which he holds diagonally across his torso. His right hand carries a single, smaller tool, pointed downward toward the lower corner of the frame. These implements act as quiet anchors for the composition, grounding the figure in his professional reality. The soft, diffused light from the upper left casts gentle shadows across the folds of his clothing and the contours of his face, providing a sense of weight and three-dimensionality to the entire scene.

The History and Provenance of the Work

The life of this portrait follows the lineage of the artist himself through the decades. By 1893, the painting rests in the hands of the artist's son, William S. Page. The family connection remains unbroken as the work passes to George S. Page in 1936. This piece remains a deeply personal object, held within the family circle for generations.

Ownership of the canvas becomes a shared responsibility among the descendants. George S. Page holds the work alongside his wife, Delilla B. Page. His sons, Blinn S. Page and Lowell Briggs Page, and his daughter, Mrs. Leslie Stockton Howell, also maintain a collective connection to the painting. This shared stewardship keeps the image within the family's private sphere for many years.

The era of private ownership reaches its conclusion in 1937. In a significant transition, the family gifts the work to the Detroit Institute of Arts. It moves from the intimate setting of a family home into the public light of the museum, where it remains today.
