Identification of the Portrait of Emily Appleton

The portrait of Emily Appleton is a small watercolor on ivory created by Sarah Goodridge in 1844. This miniature captures a single moment of presence on a surface only 4 x 3 cm in size. It exists as a quiet fragment of the nineteenth century, held within the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in the United States.

Sarah Goodridge applied her pigments to the thin, pale wafer of ivory to render the likeness of the subject. The scale of the work demands a close gaze, a proximity that turns the act of viewing into a private encounter. The blue dress of the sitter provides a cool anchor against the delicate translucence of the medium.

In this 1844 work, the artist uses the natural light of the ivory to suggest the warmth of skin. The smallness of the piece belies the precision required to define a face within such a restricted space. It remains a steady, silent presence.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition centers upon an oval-shaped portrait, a small window of life held within the silver embrace of an ornate locket. This central focus is set against a stark black background. The darkness pushes the subject forward, making the luminous skin and the blue of her dress appear to float in the void. The locket acts as a frame for a quiet moment, a silver boundary between the viewer and the sitter.

The young woman is dressed in a blue gown, a shade characteristic of the era's fashion. Her hair is styled in a manner that speaks to the mid-19th century, framing a face of stillness. There is a sense of calmness in her gaze. Her expression suggests a quiet contemplation, as if she is caught in a private thought. The light catches the subtle contours of her features, creating a sense of depth within the small, circular space.

Technique and Artistic Materials

The artist works with a fine brush to apply layers of translucent paint, building color through a slow accumulation of pigment. This meticulous hand painting allows for a sense of depth and dimensionality within the small scale. Each wash of watercolor is controlled, creating subtle nuances of expression across the face. The skin appears to hold a quiet light, achieved through the careful manipulation of these thin, transparent veils.

Ivory serves as the foundation for the portrait, providing a surface of natural delicacy and fragility. This medium interacts with the pigments to create a lifelike glow. The subject is held within an ornate silver locket, which frames the oval composition. The cool, hard metal of the silver contrasts with the soft, painted features of the woman. A stillness resides in the way the light hits the polished surface.
