V letu 1763 je Smuglevičius odpravil na pomembno umetniško potovanje v Rim, kjer je pod mentorstvom Antona von Marona začel poglobljeno študirati bele kunge. V večni mestu je ostal kar 21 let, kjer je popolnoma sprejel estetiko neklasičnega sloga. Njegov talent je prepoznal kralj Stanisław August Poniatowski, ki mu je leta 1765 podelil kraljev štipendijo in ga s tem omogočil vstop v prestižno akademijo Svetega Lukaša.Pomembna dela in dediščina
