Venus (Peter Flötner, 1540) Oljna slika, ročno naslikana le zate

Composition and Visual Details

The bronze relief sculpture titled Venus by Peter Flötner, dating from about 1540, depicts two figures positioned in a narrative scene. The central figure is seated and oriented in profile. This figure possesses long hair and is draped in a garment that falls over one shoulder, leaving part of the torso exposed. In the left hand, the seated figure holds a small bird or animal, while the right hand is raised in a gesture as if speaking or gesturing toward the second figure. To the right, a second figure stands facing the central subject. This standing figure is also draped in a garment and holds a small object or tool in the left hand.

The interaction between the two figures is established through their facing profiles and the gestural movement of the central figure. They are set against a background containing elements of foliage, suggesting an outdoor setting. The relief features a dark brown patina with lighter variations across the surface of the metal. The craftsmanship is evident in the fine details of the facial features, the texture of the hair, and the specific folds of the drapery that suggest the form of the bodies beneath the cloth.

Materials and Artistic Technique

This relief is executed in bronze, presenting a surface characterized by a deep patina. The coloration across the metal varies from dark brown tones to lighter, weathered shades, indicating the effects of age and exposure. The material allows for a high degree of precision in the rendering of the figures and their surroundings.

The craftsmanship is evident in the fine details applied to the relief. The artist has articulated the specific facial features of the figures, the individual strands of hair, and the complex folds of the draped garments. These elements are set against a background containing foliage, which is rendered with similar attention to detail. The composition utilizes profile views to establish a sense of interaction between the central seated figure and the observing figure to the right.

The sculptural style is reminiscent of classical or neoclassical art. This is expressed through the treatment of the human form and the use of drapery to suggest movement and anatomical structure. The relief, created about 1540, demonstrates a technical mastery of metalwork that emphasizes the tactile quality of the bronze surface.
