Born on April 1, 1930, in the coastal town of Buckhaven, Scotland, Houston’s journey from a young boy in Fife to a celebrated figure in the world of portraiture is a testament to a life dedicated to the pursuit of truth through paint. While his early years were shaped by the rugged landscapes of his Scottish upbringing, his artistic spirit was forged in the prestigious studios of London and Edinburgh. Before he became a master of the brush, Houston’s physical prowess led him to a brief career as a semi-professional footballer with Dundee United, an athletic chapter that ended abruptly due to a knee injury in 1951. This unexpected turn of fate redirected his energy from the pitch to the easel, setting the stage for a transformative career in fine art.
Houston’s formal education at the Edinburgh College of Art provided the technical foundation upon which he would build his illustrious reputation. He was not merely a student of technique but a scholar of the human condition.
