Identification of Hulk (Rock) by Jeff Koons

The sculpture titled Hulk (Rock) was created by the artist Jeff Koons. This work dates to 2013. It presents a pop-art interpretation of the Marvel Comics character, the Hulk. The figure is rendered with a rocky head and a body that mimics the appearance of an inflatable.

Jeff Koons, born in York, United States, in 1955, utilizes the subject of the Hulk to engage with popular culture. This specific piece combines the muscular form of the comic book character with geological elements. The figure is positioned centrally against a plain white background in the primary documentation of the work.

Composition and Visual Elements

The sculpture is positioned centrally against a plain white background, creating a straightforward and isolated composition. The figure is viewed from a frontal and slightly low perspective, which emphasizes its scale and makes the subject appear imposing. The visual arrangement focuses entirely on the form of the oversized, inflatable figure and its distinct head.

The color palette consists of green for the body, purple for the shorts, and white and grey for the head. Bold black outlines define the musculature of the body and the specific features of the face. These lines create a clear distinction between the different anatomical sections of the figure. The work combines organic shapes found in the body with the more angular, irregular forms of the rocky head.

A contrast in surface quality exists between the smooth, reflective finish of the inflatable sections and the rough, textured appearance of the head. The lighting is even and diffused across the entire object, which minimizes shadows and maintains clarity across all surfaces. This lighting ensures that the transition between the rounded contours of the limbs and the jagged edges of the head remains visible.

Materials and Production Techniques

The sculpture utilizes a combination of materials to achieve its specific surface qualities. The body of the figure appears to be constructed from inflatable PVC or a similar plastic material. This component features a highly polished, reflective finish that suggests a meticulous polishing process was applied to the surface. The head of the figure, which takes on a rocky form, is likely made from a different material, such as resin or fiberglass, to provide a distinct textural contrast to the smooth body.

Paint is used as a medium to define the colors and features of the figure. The production of the work involves mass-production techniques. The artist utilizes outsourced fabrication to realize these complex, large-scale sculptures. This method relies on industrial processes to achieve the precise, uniform surfaces seen on the inflatable elements and the detailed textures of the rocky head.
