A life shaped by lines and logic

James Irvine was an industrial designer. Born in London, he spent much of his career navigating the relationship between geometric forms and the people who use them. After studying at Kingston Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art in London, he moved to Milan in 1984. This move placed him at the center of a specific way of thinking about objects. He began working as a consultant for Olivetti, where he sat under the direction of Michele De Lucchi and Ettore Sottsass. His work during these years was defined by a focus on precision and the end user.

In 1987, his path took him to Tokyo for a year at the Toshiba Design Centre. This period of research into industrial products added another layer to his approach. By 1988, he had returned to Milan to open his own private studio. He worked with various companies, bringing a sense of geometric formalism to everything from small consumer goods to large-scale transport. His hands touched the design of a new city bus for the Hannover Üstra transport system in 2000, a project that resulted in 131 buses built by Mercedes Benz.

The studio and its reach

His practice was often intertwined with the influential Sottsass Associati. Between 1993 and 1999, he served as a partner in the agency, taking responsibility for the industrial design group. This period allowed him to bridge the gap between personal studio work and large-scale industrial production. His client list grew to include names like B&B Italia, Artemide, Magis, and Canon. He looked at how objects functioned within daily life, often applying a sense of irony or generosity to his communication and direction.

The work coming out of his Milanese studio was characterized by several specific elements:

• An attention to the quality of life for the user.
• A method rooted in the classics of the Italian design school.
• A cross-disciplinary approach to product development.

Recognition and legacy

In 2004, the Royal Society of Arts in London elected him a Royal Designer for Industry. He also shared his knowledge through teaching, serving as a professor of industrial design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe from 2005 to 2007. His academic contributions were recognized by Kingston University, which awarded him an honorary doctorate of design in 2007.

Following his death in 2013, the history of his office did not stop. The studio continued under the direction of Marialaura Rossiello Irvine and Maddalena Casadei. They maintained the core principles established during his years in Milan: precision, irony, and generosity. The work remains a study in how structured forms can meet human interaction.
