Interior (Alexander van Maasdijk, 1905) Oljna slika, ročno naslikana le zate

A Study in Light and Shadow

The composition is vertically oriented, framed on the left by heavy, dark drapery that recedes into the shadows. Through this opening, a single man in period attire is positioned in a threshold, his white stockings providing a sharp point of contrast against the muted tones of the room. He stands between the foreground and a darker, receding space, suggesting a moment of arrival or departure. The room is furnished with gilded, Rococo-style pieces, including tables and chairs with organic, curvilinear carvings. The walls are a cool, muted teal or grey, which contrasts with the warm, deep burgundies and ochres of the furniture and floor. Light enters from an unseen source to the left, casting long shadows and highlighting the textures of the polished wood and the heavy fabric of the curtains.

Technical Composition and Materiality

The work is an oil on canvas, characterized by a thick, painterly application of pigment. Visible brushstrokes define the surfaces, creating a tactile quality across the different materials depicted. The artist utilizes a complex arrangement of lines and shapes to establish depth and perspective within the domestic setting.

• Medium: Oil on canvas

Historical Context and Provenance

Created around 1905, this painting belongs to the academic tradition. It was part of the estate of Mr. W.A. Mees and was acquired in 1934. The work is currently held in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in the Netherlands. It represents a period of technical rigor in European painting, focusing on the reconstruction of specific, high-society environments through disciplined draftsmanship and light manipulation.
