Identification of the Self Portrait

Elizabeth Nourse produced Self portrait in 1892. This oil on canvas functions as a formal self-portrait, capturing the artist within her studio environment. The work provides a direct representation of the artist herself, documented during a period of significant professional development in her career.

The painting is categorized as a self-portrait. It serves as a record of Nourse's presence and her specific identity as a practitioner of her craft. Through this medium, she presents her own likeness, establishing a visual connection between the creator and the subject.

Composition and Visual Details

The artist is positioned within her studio, captured in a moment of intense concentration. She holds a paintbrush, her gaze directed toward the viewer while her expression remains fixed on the task at hand. Her attire consists of a dress paired with a tie, a detail that contributes to the realistic portrayal of her professional environment. The oil on canvas medium emphasizes the textures of her clothing and the tools of her craft.

The arrangement of the studio space provides a sense of depth and purpose. In the middle of the scene, a palette is placed as a central element of her working process. To the right, a pair of scissors rests on a surface, while two chairs are situated in the background, one toward the left and another toward the right. These objects anchor the figure within a functional, lived-in workspace.
