Two Bathers (David Park, 1958) Oljna slika, ročno naslikana le zate

Identification of Two Bathers by David Park

Two Bathers is an oil on canvas created by David Park. The work emerged in 1958, a moment when the artist had already turned his hand away from pure abstraction to reclaim the human form. This painting captures a specific slice of existence through thick, deliberate strokes of oil.

The medium of oil on canvas allows for a heavy, tactile presence on the surface. In this 1958 work, the paint carries the weight of the figures it depicts. David Park uses the material to anchor the subjects within their environment, turning a simple scene into a study of light and form.

The canvas holds a quiet intensity. It is a painting of a singular, unadorned moment. The light settles on the figures and stays there.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

Two figures occupy the immediate space, their forms defined by the weight of oil on canvas. On the left, a person stands in a bathing suit, anchored against the backdrop of a building. Toward the center, a second individual in swimwear completes the primary grouping. Their presence creates a rhythmic tension against the architecture behind them. The brushwork carries a tactile quality, turning the surface into a map of movement and light.

Beyond the central pair, the scene breathes with the presence of others. Several people are scattered throughout the background, some drifting near the edges of the frame while others hold a more central position. These figures emerge from the composition in patches of color and gesture. They exist in the periphery, adding a sense of communal life to the quietude of the bathers. The arrangement feels spontaneous, as if the eye has caught a fleeting moment of midday heat.

The composition relies on these layered planes to build depth. The building provides a structural limit to the scene, while the human forms break the geometry with their organic shapes. Light and shadow settle on the skin and the fabric of the bathing suits, grounding the figures in a specific, unadorned reality. A stillness remains in the air.

Physical Dimensions and Museum Details

The canvas measures 58 × 50 inches, or 147.3 × 127.0 cm. It occupies a substantial space, a rectangular window into a sun-drenched moment. This oil on canvas rests within the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, United States of America. The museum holds the work as part of its ongoing history, having acquired the piece in 2008.

The acquisition was made through the gifts of Mrs. Wellington S. Henderson, Helen Crocker Russell, and the Crocker Family, by exchange, and the Mary Heath Keesling Fund. Though the figures remain fixed in their painted light, the work is not on view at this time. It waits in the quiet of the museum's storage, a silent presence behind the gallery walls.
