Salome (Bernardo Strozzi, 1630) Oljna slika, ročno naslikana le zate

Identification of the Artwork and Artist

The oil on canvas painting titled Salome was executed by the Italian Baroque painter Bernardo Strozzi. This work dates to 1630. The composition depicts a biblical scene involving Salome and St. John.

Bernardo Strozzi, also known as il cappuccino and il prete genovese, was a prominent figure of the Italian Baroque period. Born in 1581 in Campo Ligure, Italy, his career spanned several decades before his death in 1644. His technical development involved training in the workshops of Cesare Corte and Pietro Sorri, which contributed to the specific handling of color and brushwork seen in his later output.

This specific piece, Salome, captures a moment from religious history. The subject matter focuses on the interaction between the figures of Salome and the severed head of St. John. The work is an example of the stylistic developments occurring in the early seventeenth century within the Italian tradition.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

The composition centers on two women positioned side by side. The woman on the left wears a necklace, while the woman on the right is dressed in more elaborate attire and jewelry. Both figures direct their gaze toward a plate held by one of the women. This plate contains a severed head, which occupies a significant portion of the lower foreground. A dark cloth drapes over the area where the neck would be, obscuring specific anatomical details of the separation.

The lighting is directed to emphasize the pallor of the severed head and the starkness of its detachment from the body. This light creates a sharp contrast against the darker elements of the scene. The arrangement of the figures and the placement of the head in the foreground establish a clear focal point within the pictorial space.

Technique and Artistic Style

This oil on canvas work is a product of the Baroque era, specifically aligning with the Genoese Baroque and Italian Baroque movements. The execution relies on chiaroscuro to define form and depth, utilizing strong contrasts between light and shadow. These tonal shifts emphasize the physical presence of the figures and the central object in the foreground. The application of paint involves expressive brushwork, which contributes to the textured surface of the composition.

The color palette is characterized by intricate details and a range of colors that define the various textures of the scene. Light falls across the subjects to highlight specific details, such as the pale skin of the figures and the fabric of their garments. The use of dark backgrounds and earthy tones helps to isolate the subjects and direct attention toward the central narrative elements. The brushstrokes are broad and vigorous, a characteristic that defines the artist's approach to both religious and secular subjects during this period.
