He came from an artistic family; his father was the celebrated genre painter Pietro Longhi. He further honed his skills studying with Giuseppe Nogari (1699–1763), another respected Venetian artist.

Longhi specialized in portraiture, particularly depictions of Venetian nobles and prominent figures. Unlike some contemporaries who focused on grand historical or mythological scenes, Longhi concentrated on portraying individuals within their social context. Influences
While deeply influenced by his father's realistic approach, Alessandro Longhi also demonstrated an appreciation for other masters.
