Somaya Critchlow: Exploring Intimacy and Female Gaze Through Figurative Painting

Somaya Critchlow is a British artist born in London, UK, in 1993. She lives and works in London, establishing herself as a prominent voice within contemporary figurative painting. Her artistic journey began with formal training at the University of Brighton’s BA program in Painting, followed by postgraduate studies at The Royal Drawing School, where she honed her skills and earned a Diploma in 2017. Critchlow's breakthrough came in April 2023 with “Somaya Critchlow: Paintings and Drawings,” an inaugural exhibition at The FLAG Art Foundation in New York City, marking her debut appearance on the North American art scene. Subsequent recognition includes inclusion in group shows like “Pictures Girls Make”: Portraitures” curated by Alison M. Gingeras at Blum & Poe (Los Angeles) and “Women Painting Women” presented at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Texas), solidifying her position as a rising talent within the international art community.

Early Influences and Artistic Development

Critchlow’s artistic sensibilities are deeply rooted in a fascination with psychological exploration and nuanced observation—themes that permeate her oeuvre. Her undergraduate studies at Brighton instilled a foundational understanding of technique and composition, while The Royal Drawing School fostered a commitment to meticulous detail and conceptual rigor. Notably, Critchlow cites influences ranging from Old Masters painters like Rembrandt and Caravaggio – masters known for their dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and psychological depth – to cinematic auteurs such as David Lynch and Angela Carter, whose works delve into surrealism and the complexities of female subjectivity. These inspirations inform her distinctive visual language, characterized by a deliberate consideration of materiality and texture alongside an unwavering focus on portraying human emotion with sensitivity and precision.

Signature Style: Intimate Portraits and Female Perspective

Critchlow’s artistic style is immediately recognizable for its captivating portrayal of nude or semi-nude figures—often presented in contemplative poses—that explore themes of vulnerability, desire, and psychological introspection. Her canvases are imbued with a palpable atmosphere of melancholy and tenderness, reflecting her profound engagement with the female gaze. Critchlow skillfully employs oil paint, graphite, and ink to achieve remarkable textural richness and tonal subtlety, capturing fleeting expressions and subtle gestures that convey unspoken narratives. Recurring motifs include references to mythology and literature—particularly Carter’s reimagining of fairy tales—demonstrating a willingness to challenge conventional representations and interrogate societal expectations surrounding femininity.
