Pieter Fransz de Grebber bol významným predstaviteľom holandského zlatého veku.
De Grebber sa narodil v Haarleme ako najstarší syn Fransa Pietersza de Grebbera (1573–1643), ktorý bol v tomto meste maliarom a vyšívačom, a ako brat maliarov Marie a Alberta. Svoje umelecké schopnosti sa učil priamo od svojho otca, ako aj od Hendrika Goltziusa. Pochádal z katolíckej a umeleckej rodiny, pričom jeho sestra Maria sa neskôr stala sv Städkovou Gabriel Metzu. Bol priateľom kniežaťa a muzikologa Jana Albertszoona Bana a dokonca mal báseň upravenú do hudby haarlemským kompozitorom Corneliso Padbrué. V roku 1632 sa stal členom haarlemskej svätost. Luky, hoci ako maliar pôsobil už desť rokov. Medzi jeho žiac ako jeho žakov patrili Gerbrand Ban, Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Egbert van Heemskerck a Dirck Helmbreeker.
V roku 1618 odišli otec a syn do Antverp, kde vyjednávali s Peterom Paulom Rubensom o predaji jeho maľby „Daniel v levej jame“. Táto snímka bola následne – prostredníctvom britského veľvyslanca v republike, sira Dudleya Carletona – odovzdaná kráľovi Karolovi I. Maloval oltáre pre kostoly vo Flandersku aj pre skryté katolícke kostoly v republike. Je možné, že spolupracoval aj s dánskymi klientmi.
Pieter zostal single a od roku 1634 až do svojej smrti žil v haarlemskom béguináde.
Okrem historických malieb Pieter de Grebber vytváral aj množstvo portrétov; prežitých sa nám zachovalo tiež mnoho jeho kresieb a niekoľko akvatifov. Z rôznych vplyvov, ako bol utrechtský caravaggizmus, Rubens či Rembrandt, vytvoril veľmi osobitný štýl. Spolu so Salomonom de Brayom bol pionierom a prvým vrcholom školy „haarlemského klasicizmu“, produkujúcej maľby vyznačujúce sa dobre organizovanou jasnosťou a svetlými tónmi.
V roku 1649 De Grebber napísal traktát „Regulen welcke by een goet schilder en teyckenaar geobserveert en achtervolght moeten werden“ (Pravidlá, ktoré by mal dodržiavať dobrý maliar a majster kreslenia). V tomto dokumente vysvetľuje jedenásť najdôležitejších pravidiel, ktorých podľa neho by sa mali klasicistickí maliari snažiť dodržiavať. Hoci klasici na tieto pravidlá nevzdávali absolútnu vernosť, napriek tomu ich vždy prísne dodržiavali. Takmer všetky tieto pravidlá čerpal z manieristického diela Karel van Mandera „Schilder-boeck“, v ktorom bola historická maľba predstavovaná ako najvyšší stupeň hierarchie žánrov.
