Antonio Ruiz, conocido como ?El Corzo? o ?El Corcito?, por su parecido con un torero español del mismo apodo, creó este pequeño gouache en 1923, tres años antes de dejar México en pos de su carrera de diseño escenográfico en Hollywood. La enigmática imagen, buen ejemplo de sus primeros diseños de escenografía, anuncia su obra posterior en cine y teatro. En Alegoría teatral, Ruiz hace un montaje de imágenes que aluden al teatro clásico griego, denotando el renovado interés en la filosofía clásica entre la intelectualidad mexicana (sobre todo de José Vasconcelos, Secretario de Educación Pública durante las décadas de 1910 y 1920. De ser éste un diseño para una obra teatral, se desconoce la referencia. Un actor desnudo, con una máscara blanca y una rizada peluca rubia salta en el espacio con los brazos extendidos. Por extraño que parezca, parece emasculado aunque quizá lleva un ropaje ajustado que le cubre todo el cuerpo. Su aspecto físico, modelado con simples líneas oscuras, recuerda las formas estilizadas de los kouroi, esculturas griegas de la antigüedad. Ruiz destaca la forma geométrica de la sombra del actor sobre el piso de madera, lo que sugiere un escenario muy iluminado. La figura central está delante de un escenario pintado que incluye un templo griego y cuatro construcciones clásicas que retroceden en la distancia.
