1883 - 1965

A Life Shaped by the Dutch Landscape

Born in The Hague, Netherlands, on May 20, 1883, Paul Arntzenius grew up in a world defined by the subtle shifts of light and water. His early years were marked by a significant loss when his mother passed away, leaving him under the care of W.B. Tholen. This early connection to a mentor would eventually lead him to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where he studied from 1901 to 1903. His education was shaped by the guidance of several teachers, including Herbert van der Poll, Willem Bastiaan Tholen, and Willem Witsen. These formative years provided the technical foundation for a life spent observing the natural world.

His artistic path was not confined to a single corner of the Netherlands. He traveled and worked across Belgium, France, Zeeland, Amsterdam, and The Hague. This movement allowed him to capture a variety of environments, from the quietude of a beach near Domburg to the bustling life of a river estuary. His work often focused on the quiet details of the landscape, such as haystacks in a field or the way a barge sits upon a river. He was also a man of deep personal interest in the arts, becoming an avid collector and eventually donating his collection to the Stedelijk Museum Gouda.

The Quiet Observation of Nature

Arntzenius had a way of finding meaning in the ordinary. His paintings often centered on the stillness of a specific moment, whether it was a quiet day on a beach or the light hitting a church in Veere. His subjects were frequently found in the coastal and rural stretches of the Netherlands, such as Oostvoorne or the dunes. He captured scenes like a mother and child strolling through a dune landscape, or the simple presence of a barge on a river. His ability to translate these observations onto canvas was recognized by his peers, leading to his membership in the prestigious "Pulchri Studio" in The Hague and "Arti et Amicitiae" in Amsterdam.

His technical skill was evident in his varied subjects, ranging from large-scale landscapes to intimate still lifes. He painted:

  • The Grote Kerk, Veere
  • A quiet day on the beach near Domburg
  • Haystacks
  • A barge on a river estuary
  • A dune landscape with a mother and child strolling
  • Still lifes featuring white roses or pumpkins

Recognition and Legacy

In 1949, Arntzenius achieved a significant milestone when he won the Jacob Maris Prize alongside Theo Bitter. This recognition came late in his life, a period during which he continued to produce work that reflected his deep connection to the Dutch terrain. He was a man who lived through his observations, even documenting his thoughts in his 1963 book, overpeinzingen van een schilder. His life came to a close in The Hague on January 4, 1965.

Today, his legacy is preserved in several important institutions. His paintings can be found in the collections of the Hague Gemeentemuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Gouda, the Singer Museum Laren, and the Rijkscollection. Through these works, the light and atmosphere of the Dutch landscape that he spent his life studying remain accessible to those who seek them.
