The Life and Training of Nicolaas van Eyck
Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Nicolaas van Eyck was the son of a tailor named Nicolaas van Eyck and Joanna Ros. He began his artistic journey in 1632 as a pupil of the prominent history and genre painter Theodoor Rombouts, studying under him at the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. His family was deeply involved in the arts; his brother Gaspar became a marine painter, and his sons, Nicolaas II and Jan Carel van Eyck, also pursued careers as painters.

His professional standing was recognized in works such as Jacob de Formentrou's Cabinet of Pictures, where a painting by van Eyck depicting an equestrian battle was included, signaling his status as a leading painter in Antwerp.
