A Life in Portuguese Art

Joaquim Rafael was a versatile Portuguese painter, set designer, and sculptor. Born in Porto, he began his artistic journey at the age of eleven when he joined the workshop of Domingos Francisco Vieira. His early training included enrolling in the drawing class of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro. Following his marriage to Maria Francisca da Purificação, and later to Margarida Emília, Rafael’s career expanded through collaborations with his father-in-law and the sculptor João José Braga.

His professional trajectory saw him execute various works for the Porto City Council, including panels commemorating the expulsion of the French in 1808 and the reception of regiments in 1814. He also produced religious works, such as the Ascension of Christ for the Chapel of Santa Catarina, and portraits for the Benedictine Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães.

Royal Appointments and Sculptural Works

In 1824, Rafael moved to Lisbon, where his career reached new heights. He was appointed First Painter of the Chamber and Court in 1825 and later became the master of historical drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts. His portfolio included portraits of Queen D. Maria II and Manuel Inácio Martins Pamplona Corte Real, 1st Count of Subserra.

Beyond the canvas, Rafael was noted for his work in sculpture and scenography. He was responsible for creating wax busts of Queen D. Maria I, King João VI, and Queen Carlota Joaquina, which are housed in the Ajuda National Palace. While some contemporary observers noted a likeness in these busts, they were sometimes viewed as close to caricatures. His artistic output also included:
