A Life of Neoclassic Mastery

Francisco Bayeu was a Spanish painter who specialized in religious and historical themes, working within the Neoclassic style. He is particularly recognized for his expertise in frescoes. His early artistic training involved studying under local masters such as José Luzán and Juan Andrés Merklein, as well as working as an assistant to Antonio González Velázquez.

In 1758, Bayeu moved to Madrid to study at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Following a period of expulsion from the academy in 1759 due to conflicts with instructors, he returned to Zaragoza. His professional career later brought him back to Madrid, where he was recalled in 1763 by Anton Raphael Mengs to assist in the decoration of the Royal Palace. During this time, he also held a position at the Royal Tapestry Factory under King Charles III, creating designs and cartones.

Academic Achievements and Later Years

Bayeu held several prestigious positions throughout his career. He was named a professor and Lieutenant-Director of the Academia in 1765 and was appointed as a court painter in 1767. His academic journey continued through further studies in Italy, supported by a scholarship received in 1766. In 1788, he achieved the role of Director of Painting at the Academia.

His later life was marked by declining health following the death of his brother, Ramón. He eventually reached the position of Director of the Academia in 1795, shortly before his death from an agonizing disease. His professional circle included notable figures such as Francisco Goya, who had married Bayeu's sister, Josefa.
