Hypnero (Erotic Dream), is a variation on a series of large-scale installations that Laura Santamaria has completed in different sites across Europe. Instead of using ink, graphite, charcoal, or oilstick for her drawings, the artists employs a source of open fire as her drawing tool. A candle or a torch get fastened to a long handle, allowing the artist to reach the ceiling, edges and corners of her ‘canvases’ – large scale walls in architectural environments such as churches or spaces of pubic and civic use. The flame touches the surface, following the movement of the artist. It doesn’t burn the wall, but as the movement and proximity to the surface affects the efficacy of the combustion, the torch begins to stain the wall: blacksmoke – soot – starts to de- posit on the surface. Depending on the distance to the wall and the availability of oxygen, the deposit appears as faint or dark, as dusty or oily; it seems to be powered or tarred. While the process can be guided by the artist, much of the final outcome is left to the fortuity of the flame. The drawings become indexical marks: signs of a past process that is out of the hands of its maker. Such index- icality and its emphasis on making the past visible is one of the main aspects of Santamaria’s drawing. It presents marks and stains of the past, the remnants of events that are often hard to control and even harder to erase.” Daniel F. Herrmann Eisler Curator & Head of Curatorial Studies. Laura Santamaria: A Dancer Rooted in Tradition, Embracing Innovation

Laura Santamaria is a Spanish dancer born in Seville, Spain, whose artistic journey began within the nurturing environment of her mother’s academy, Ángela Santamaría – the Superior Conservatory of Dance of Murcia. From a young age, she cultivated a profound passion for movement and expression, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career spanning ballet classique, modern dance, jazz, dramatic art, and notably, flamenco. This multifaceted training instilled in her not only technical prowess but also an appreciation for diverse artistic traditions. Her dedication to flamenco solidified her identity as a performer and choreographer, propelling her to establish her own dance company—a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to furthering the art form. Santamaria’s performances resonate across Spain and internationally, captivating audiences with her grace, artistry, and interpretive depth. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she gained recognition for her role as Anabel in the second season of “Señoras del (h)ampa,” a darkly comedic series that showcased her versatility as an actress.

Early Training: Santamaria’s formative years were marked by intensive ballet training at the Cristina Heeren Foundation, followed by continued exploration of various dance styles under esteemed instructors like Manuela Ríos, Rosario Toledo, Adela Campallo, Carmen Ledesma, Milagros Mengíbar and Rafael Campallo.
Flamenco Mastery: Recognizing flamenco’s significance as her artistic core, Santamaria pursued advanced studies with maestros such as Ángel Rivero, Juan Ruiz Flores, Antonio Núñez Franco and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, honing her technique and deepening her understanding of the art form's expressive power.
Performance Career Highlights: Her performances have graced stages across Europe and Latin America, including solo engagements at the Opera Theater in Nice (France) and collaborations with renowned ballet companies like Ballet Nacional de España (BNE). Notable productions include “The Short Life” and “Tierra-Lorca cancionesero popular,” earning her accolades for artistic excellence.
Recognition & Awards: Santamaria’s talent has been acknowledged through numerous awards, including first prize at “Jóvenes Flamencos de Calasparra” (Murcia), third prize for “alegrías” at the “La Perla de Cádiz” contest and second prize from the “Federación de Peñas flamencas de Sevilla.”

Her artistic vision extends beyond performance; Santamaria actively engages in teaching, fostering the next generation of flamenco dancers through her role as instructor at Estudio Flamenco Sevilla and Cristina Heeren’s foundation.
