Identification of Character study by Ferdinand Hodler

Ferdinand Hodler created Character study around 1906. Originally titled Figurenstudie zum Blick ins Unendliche, this work belongs to the genre of sketch and study. It represents a significant moment in the artist's development, reflecting the stylistic shifts occurring at the turn of the century.

The piece is categorized within the Art Nouveau (Modern) style. It functions as a preparatory exploration of form, capturing the essential qualities of the human figure through a focused, analytical lens. This specific study provides insight into the artist's approach to anatomical structure and rhythmic composition.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

A nude male figure dominates the composition, positioned centrally to emphasize the anatomical form. The subject stands in a straightforward pose with hands placed on his hips, a stance that highlights the musculature and structural proportions of the body. This arrangement creates a sense of symmetry within the frame, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the human form.

The figure occupies most of the vertical space, creating a direct and immediate presence. The background is a plain, minimal surface, likely a wall, which provides no environmental context and prevents any distraction from the central subject. This lack of depth ensures the focus remains strictly on the study of the male physique.

Technical Details and Physical Dimensions

This work is a sketch and study created about 1906. The piece is presented as a photograph of a drawing, capturing the immediate qualities of the original medium. The composition relies on the direct application of materials to a surface to define form and anatomical structure.

The original materials used for this study were likely graphite pencils or charcoal sticks applied to paper. These tools allow for the fluid, continuous lines and subtle tonal shifts visible in the rendering of the figure. The monochromatic nature of the medium emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow through varying pressure and density of the marks.

The physical dimensions of the work are 34 x 18.4 cm. This compact scale is characteristic of preparatory studies intended for private observation or as technical explorations of the human form.
