The Artistic Practice of Lutz Bacher
Lutz Bacher was an American artist whose body of work has been described as eclectic, rough, open-ended, and disturbing. Working across a variety of formats, including videotapes, photographs, and mixed media, Bacher incorporated elements from personal artifacts, found objects, and popular culture. Her practice frequently addressed questions of identity as expressed through the human body and sexuality. Much of her work examined the intersections of masculinity, violence, and power, often overturning images designed for male pleasure to reveal the exploitation of the female body.
Her early photographic work includes the 1975 series Men at War, which utilized a single image of American sailors on a beach, and the 1986 Sex with Strangers series, which combined found pornographic images with captions written in the style of scientific study. In the late 1980s, Bacher transitioned into video art, producing time-based works such as Huge Uterus (1989), which documented a surgical procedure to remove fibroid tumors from her uterus. Other notable works include the installation Closed Circuit (1997-2000), which utilized a closed-circuit camera to transmit a live feed of surveillance footage into a gallery.
