Opis dzieła

The Japanese, during the period of Japan’s colonial rule over Korea, established reformatories in order to educate the Korean people to obey to their rule. These reform schools included the Mokpo school in Mokpo, Jeolla-do and Seongam School in Seongamdo Island, Ansan. Therein, the Koreans suffered from the poor facilities, a severe degree of human rights violations, exploitation of labor, and an isolation from the outside world under the name of “self-support.” Young boys, more than one could count, died of escape attempts and suffered from violence and malnutrition. Out of hunger, some died by mistaking poisonous mushrooms for edible herbal roots and tree bark. That place where so many young lives were sacrificed became today’s Gyeonggi Creation Center! And I am an artist who eats, sleeps, and works in the site of the old Seongam reform school that still bears the young boys’ smell of blood. Even skipping one meal makes me dizzy, weeding half an hour in the art farm makes my legs crumble, and just being prevented from what I want to do makes me complain. Then I imagine how the young boys could endure that time period. Seongam-dong is a land reclaimed from the sea by the young boys’ little hands that quarried stone to build a breakwater. Although this area is now home to diverse salt plants and beautiful reeds, it was once the site of a salt field, the very source of power with which a human trampled another and of the salt as valuable as gold produced by the numerous sacrificed children at the Seongam reform school in 1946. That is how I installed my work on the site of the old salt field. Even animals go hunting no more than they need. Then why do human beings, the lord of all creation, fret over storing food, land, and money which was invented for the sake of convenience after all. Perhaps, that is a mental illness. It has been only 70 years since the war ended. Let’s give us some more time.it was not enough time to overcome things anyway. The gone sea caused a fisherman to shed tears of blood, and the boat was abandoned. The fisherman must have gazed over the inland water without hope. The fisherman must have heaved a deep sigh, or rather wailed. There is nowhere in the country where the fisherman’s wailing did not reach! I set a boat afloat on that field of reeds that will take the people, who has been living as if they overcame or nothing happened.I floated a boat on that beds of reeds while imagining a coarse yet hopeful breath of a fisherman starting a day as well as a boat returning with a full load of fish. I float a fish-smelling boat fully loaded with the fishing net the fisherman newly repaired yesterday, where no war or Seongam reformatory or salt field exists, among the reeds.

Park Jun Sik – A Landscape Painter Rooted in Korean Tradition

Park Jun Sik, born November 16, 1991, is a South Korean artist whose work embodies the serene beauty of Korean landscapes and carries subtle symbolic undertones. While biographical details remain somewhat sparse—a testament to the evolving landscape of contemporary art—his artistic vision speaks volumes about his connection to Korean cultural heritage and his exploration of minimalist aesthetics. ### Early Life & Artistic Beginnings Information regarding Park Jun Sik’s formative years is limited, but he hails from Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Raised in a family with musical inclinations – his mother a piano teacher – he developed an early passion for music, participating actively in school band performances and covering popular Korean artists like Buzz and Flower. This engagement with sound undoubtedly instilled within him a sensitivity to rhythm and texture, elements that would later find expression in his paintings. Notably, he was named Hyung-sik (형식) by Buddhist monk, reflecting the faith of his mother and grandmother. ### Artistic Style & Influences Park Jun Sik’s artistic style leans heavily toward minimalist landscape painting. He favors muted palettes—often dominated by shades of grey, beige, and earthy greens—creating canvases that prioritize simplicity and contemplation. Unlike more flamboyant movements like Impressionism or Expressionism, his approach seeks to capture the essence of a scene rather than its immediate visual impact. This deliberate restraint allows for deeper reflection on themes of solitude, harmony with nature, and perhaps even hints of Korean folklore and mythology – elements subtly woven into his compositions. His work draws inspiration from traditional Korean landscape painting techniques—particularly *Sanshin*, which emphasizes horizontal brushstrokes to convey vastness and tranquility—a stylistic choice that underscores his respect for artistic heritage. ### Notable Works & Recognition Among Park Jun Sik’s oeuvre, “Set a Boat Afloat” stands out as a particularly striking example of his distinctive style. The painting depicts a solitary boat gliding across calm waters under a hazy sky, rendered with meticulous attention to detail and textural nuance. It exemplifies the artist's ability to distill complex emotions into deceptively simple forms—a hallmark of minimalist art that resonates powerfully with viewers seeking solace and contemplation. While critical acclaim remains modest compared to more commercially successful artists, Park Jun Sik’s unwavering dedication to his craft and his commitment to preserving Korean artistic traditions are commendable achievements in themselves. ### Future Directions & Legacy As a rising talent within the South Korean art scene, Park Jun Sik continues to refine his technique and explore new avenues for creative expression. His work serves as a reminder that beauty can be found in understated elegance—a valuable contribution to contemporary art discourse and a testament to the enduring power of landscape painting as a medium for conveying profound emotional resonance.
