Born on January 30, 1939, in Montevideo, Uruguay, Orzuj’s early life was steeped in a rich intellectual and multicultural tapestry. As the daughter of Moisés Orzuj, the founder of the Yiddish-language newspaper Folksblat, she grew up surrounded by a unique confluence of Jewish Uruguayan traditions and global intellectualism. This formative environment, which brought her into contact with figures ranging from the literary giant Juan Carlos Onetti to the political icon Golda Meir, instilled in her a lifelong devotion to narrative, empathy, and the power of the written and drawn word.

Her studies at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura and the Instituto de Profesores Artigas provided a rigorous foundation, but it was her time at the Taller Torres García that perhaps left the most indelible mark on her aesthetic DNA. Her professional journey gained significant momentum in 1988 when she joined the international cartoon magazine WittyWorld as an editor. It was here that she mastered the delicate balance of humor and gravity, using the medium of the cartoon to traverse cultural boundaries and address pressing global human rights issues. Her work became a poignant vehicle for discussing violence against women and children, utilizing wit not merely for laughter, and but as a tool for profound social critique.

In 1994, she founded the Salón Internacional de Humor Gráfico de la Mujer (International Women’s Graphic Humor Exhibition).
