He studied drawing and painting at the National Academy of Design from 1904-1908 and had his first exhibition, "Oils by Eight American Artists," at the Artists' Gallery in 1907. In 1926, Benn began collaborating on theatrical sets, immersing himself in the collaborative spirit of performance art. This experience fostered an understanding of visual storytelling and spatial composition—skills that would prove invaluable throughout his career. His admission to the Union of Professional Artists of Poland in 1928 marked a pivotal moment, propelling him into the vibrant artistic milieu of Warsaw and Białystok.
