Ángel Valdez (Lima, 1961), in his reflections upon tripartite worlds and times (based on the ideas of the medieval theologist Joaquín de Fiore regarding the division of time into three epochs, in accordance with the dogma of the Christian trinity), is inspired by the Cusco School colonial-era painting “The Trinity Enthroned as Three Identical Figures”, in order to represent the stages into which Peruvian history has been divided traditionally (Pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican periods). The three figures are combined with references to digital and electronic technologies. At the heart of the composition, the sign “For rent” refers to the history of Peru.

Om kunstneren

A Peruvian Visionary Bridging Anthropology and Baroque Tradition

Emerging from the vibrant cultural landscape of Lima, Peru, in 1961, Ángel Valdez Rosales carries within his creative DNA a profound connection to Andean cosmology. His artistic identity is not merely defined by the brush, but by an intellectual curiosity that seeks to bridge the gap between the ancient and the contemporary. This unique perspective was forged during his formative years, where he pursued studies in anthropology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. This academic foundation allowed him to approach the canvas as a researcher, viewing cultural narratives and symbolic representations not just as subjects, but as deep-seated layers of human history that demand decoding.

While his anthropological training provided the conceptual soul of his work, it was at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Lima that he mastered the physical language of painting. By grounding himself in classical techniques, Valdez Rosales developed a command over light, shadow, and texture that pays homage to the masters of the past. This duality—the analytical eye of the anthropologist and the meticulous hand of the classical painter—allows him to create works that are simultaneously intellectually rigorous and visually arresting.

The Synthesis of Epochs and Iconography

The true brilliance of Valdez Rosales lies in his ability to synthesize disparate cultural traditions into a singular, cohesive vision. His artistic journey reached a significant milestone in 1991 with the unveiling of “Juicio Sumario,” a monumental canvas that served as a declaration of his creative ambitions. In this work, he began to grapple with the heavy themes of judgment and perception, exploring the delicate interplay between subjective experience and objective reality. Through intricate visual metaphors, he draws from Andean iconography while subtly weaving in biblical narratives, creating a dialogue between the sacred and the terrestrial.

This fascination with historical layers is perhaps most evident in his evocative piece, “None so blind.” In this work, the artist reflects upon tripartite worlds and time, drawing inspiration from the medieval theological concepts of Joaquín de Fiore. He looks back to the Cusco School—the colonial-era painting tradition of Peru—specifically referencing the masterpiece “The Trinity Enthroned as Three Identical Figures.” However, Valdez Rosales does not merely replicate the past; he reimagines it for the modern age. He integrates references to digital and electronic technologies into these classical structures, representing the traditional stages of Peruvian history—Pre-Hispanic, colonial, and republican—through a lens that acknowledges our contemporary, interconnected era.

Recognition, Collaboration, and Artistic Legacy

The trajectory of Valdez Rosales’s career has been marked by significant international recognition and prestigious accolades. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, his work gained broader visibility through grants awarded by the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (Aeci). Furthermore, a prestigious scholarship from the Ministerio de Educación y Cultura de España provided him with essential professional training within the Ibero-American cultural sector, an experience that significantly broadened his artistic horizons and exposed him to diverse global practices.

Beyond his solo endeavors, Valdez Rosales has been a vital participant in the revitalization of the Baroque spirit. He famously collaborated with a group of colleagues dedicated to rediscovering and reinterpreting Baroque painting, ensuring that these classical aesthetics remained relevant in a contemporary context. His recent projects, such as “Lust. Psychedelic Eros,” demonstrate his continued evolution, where he explores themes of voluptuousness and the "reversibility of the image," inviting viewers into a riddle of frozen dissolutions and shifting visions.

Today, the legacy of Ángel Valdez Rosales stands as a testament to the power of multidisciplinary art. His oeuvre remains a profound exploration of:

  • Cultural Continuity: The seamless blending of Pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern identities.
  • Symbolic Depth: The use of religious and anthropological motifs to critique contemporary existence.
  • Technical Mastery: The application of Baroque light and shadow to modern, technological subjects.
