A Vietnamese refugee who found sanctuary in Germany, Duong studied jewellery design in Pforzheim where he continues to reside. His brooch and large-scale jewellery designs have earned hima raft of accolades including being named the German town of Hanau’s sixth honorary city goldsmith in 2015.Hewn from gold-plated silver and freshwater pearls, this collection of jewellery is inspired by the undiscovered mysteries of the deep ocean. Using delicate textures to create the allure of fossilised frost, moss or fungi, the elements of each necklace can be re-arranged, imbuing each piece with a free-form quality of interpretation. The surfaces of each of these pearl, coral and shell-like shapes speak to the often otherworldly expressions of mother nature.

Biografie kunstenaar

Sam Tho Duong: Transforming Everyday Materials into Elegant Jewelry

Vietnamese-German artist Sam Tho Duong’s artistic journey began in Bien Hoa, Vietnam, amidst the anxieties of the late 1970s when his family undertook a courageous undertaking – a perilous voyage to Germany seeking refuge from communist rule. This formative experience instilled within him an unwavering belief in resilience and adaptability—qualities that would subsequently become cornerstones of his distinctive artistic practice. He pursued formal training in jewelry design at Pforzheim Hochschule für Gestaltung, establishing himself as a resident artist in Germany where he continues to refine his craft today. Duong’s signature style resides in the remarkable reimagining of unassuming materials – primarily yogurt containers – transforming them into necklaces and rings that transcend conventional artistic expectations. This innovative approach garnered considerable acclaim during his exhibition “lemitcA,” showcasing the delicate harmony between form and texture achieved through meticulous craftsmanship. The piece ‘lemitcA,’ a white ring adorned with gold beads, serves as an exemplary illustration of this aesthetic philosophy—a testament to Duong’s ability to elevate commonplace objects into captivating works of art. He skillfully manipulates these recycled materials not merely for their visual appeal but as potent symbols representing cultural heritage and the transformative power of repurposing. His dedication to artistic excellence was formally recognized when he received the Hanau Goldsmith Laureate award, firmly establishing him as one of Germany’s foremost jewelry designers. Throughout his career, Duong's creations have graced prestigious galleries and museums across Europe, attracting critical acclaim for their understated elegance and profound conceptual depth. He delves into themes of metamorphosis and remembrance—mirroring perhaps the personal narrative of his own relocation—a journey from Vietnam to Germany characterized by displacement yet enriched by artistic exploration. This experience profoundly shaped his worldview and fueled his desire to express complex emotions through sculptural forms. Beyond his technical mastery, Duong’s work speaks to a broader contemplation of materiality and its capacity to convey emotion. Like many contemporary artists wrestling with questions of identity and cultural roots, he champions sustainable practices within the jewelry industry—demonstrating an astute awareness of environmental responsibility alongside artistic vision. His ongoing exploration of form and texture continues to inspire fellow artisans and collectors alike, securing his legacy as a visionary innovator who reimagines traditional crafts with fresh perspectives—a true embodiment of artistic transformation. Duong’s artistic influences extend beyond purely aesthetic considerations; he draws inspiration from the traditions of Vietnamese lacquer art and the minimalist elegance of Scandinavian design. These influences inform his approach to composition and color palettes, resulting in pieces that possess a quiet sophistication and contemplative quality. Furthermore, Duong's fascination with natural forms—particularly the patterns found in frost crystals—is evident in several of his sculptures and jewelry designs. He seeks to capture the essence of these ephemeral phenomena through meticulous attention to detail and textural variation. His most celebrated achievement is undoubtedly the Hanau Goldsmith Laureate award, recognizing his exceptional talent and contribution to the field. This honor solidified Duong’s position as a leading figure in German jewelry design—a testament to his unwavering commitment to artistic excellence and innovation. His work has garnered international acclaim for its conceptual depth and aesthetic beauty—inspiring artists worldwide to explore unconventional materials and techniques while conveying powerful emotional narratives.
