Nalini Malani (1946 –)

ILHAM Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

The gallery’s layout provides an open and inviting atmosphere, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the art on display. Natural light floods the exhibition halls.

b. 1946, Karachi, undivided India; based in India and EuropeThe multifaceted urban chaos of Lohar Chawl, a commercial locality of Mumbai, India, is captured in this deeply layered monoprint by Nalini Malani. Using a technique the artist calls “cloning”, the monoprint has been photocopied and worked over in ink, charcoal, watercolour, pen, and collage. In doing so, she records the lives and stories of those living in the area, which history often sweeps aside.
