jose gurvich (1927 – 1974)

Discover José Gurvich (1927-1974), a pivotal Uruguayan Constructivist painter, potter & musician. Explore his geometric abstractions, vibrant colors, and symbolic works influenced by the Taller Torres García movement. Find artworks & legacy info.

This work is structured by means of a grid that divides the surface into different spaces loaded with symbolic elements. José Gurvich, in the search for new expressive languages, tries to escape from the orthogonal grid, organizing the composition in a more open and liberated way. The play of the curvilinear outline frames the succession of ivory and black, highlighting the textures of incision and carving on the wood. The contrasting sumptuousness of the chiaroscuro reveals the forms of Gurvich
