- Victor Długacz (later Avigdor Arikha) werd geboren als zoon van Duitssprekende Joodse ouders in Rădăuţi, Boekovina, Roemenië.
- Hij groeide op in Czernowitz, eveneens in de regio Boekovina.
- Zijn familie werd in 1941 gedwongen gedeporteerd naar de door Roemenië beheerde concentratiekampen van Transnistrië, waar zijn vader om het leven kwam.
