Portrait of a Gentleman in his Study (detail) (1530) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Portrait of a Gentleman in his Study (detail)

1530 · Oil On Canvas · Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia, Venecija

To stand before this depiction of a gentleman in his study is to step across the threshold into a world steeped in contemplation and cultivated refinement. The air seems thick with the scent of aged paper, polished wood, and perhaps the faint, sweet echo of music from the nearby violin. This portrait does more than merely record a likeness; it captures an entire state of being—the quiet authority vested in…

Christ Taking Leave of his Mother (1521) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Christ Taking Leave of his Mother

1521 · Acrylic On Canvas · Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Berlinas

Lorenzo Lotto's “Christ Taking Leave of His Mother,” painted in 1521, isn’t merely a depiction of a poignant farewell; it’s a profound meditation on faith, familial love, and the impending sorrow that shadows Christ’s journey to Jerusalem. This masterpiece, now residing within the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, offers a rare glimpse into the heart of Venetian Renaissance spirituality—a world where earthly beauty intertwined seamlessly with divine symbolism.

3
Allegory of Virtue and Vice (detail) (1505) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Allegory of Virtue and Vice (detail)

1505 · Oil On Canvas · National Gallery of Art, Vašingtonas

Lorenzo Lotto's “Allegory of Virtue and Vice,” a remarkably preserved panel painting from 1505, isn’t merely a depiction of figures; it’s a meticulously crafted stage for an eternal struggle. Holding court within a dramatic, almost theatrical space—a strip of land receding into a turbulent sea beneath a brooding sky—Lotto presents a scene both profoundly unsettling and deeply resonant with human experience. The painting immediately commands attention not through overt grandeur,…

Allegory of Virtue and Vice (1505) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Allegory of Virtue and Vice

1505 · Acrylic On Canvas · National Gallery of Art, Vašingtonas

Lorenzo Lotto's "Allegory of Virtue and Vice," painted in 1505, is not merely a decorative panel; it’s a profound meditation on human choice, morality, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. Created during a pivotal moment in his career – a period marked by both artistic experimentation and a growing independence from Venetian conventions – this work reveals Lotto's unique vision and his masterful ability to imbue a complex…

Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery (1527) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery

1527 · Oil On Canvas · Liuvro muziejus, Paryžius

Lorenzo Lotto's “The Woman Taken in Adultery,” painted around 1527-29, is not merely a depiction of a biblical transgression; it’s a profound meditation on sin, judgment, and the complexities of human morality. Housed within the hallowed halls of the Louvre Museum in Paris, this oil painting transcends its subject matter to become a powerful exploration of virtue and vice, rendered with Lotto's signature blend of High Renaissance grace and nascent…

Portrait of a crossbowman (Mastro Battista di Rocca Contrada) (1551) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Portrait of a crossbowman (Mastro Battista di Rocca Contrada)

1551 · Oil On Canvas · Kapitolijos muziejai, Roma

A man emerges from a heavy, ink-black shadow. He is Mastro Battista di Rocca Contrada, a man defined by the tool he holds. His hands grip a wooden crossbow, the grain of the timber rendered with a tactile, weathered precision. He does not look away. His gaze is a direct line, steady and heavy with a quiet, internal tension. The light catches the ridge of his nose and the coarse…

Friar Angelo Ferretti as Saint Peter Martyr (1549) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Friar Angelo Ferretti as Saint Peter Martyr

1549 · Oil On Canvas · Harvard Art Museums, Kembrižas

A single knife is embedded in the shoulder of the man, a sharp intrusion against the pale skin. He sits in a heavy, dark habit, the coarse fabric absorbing the light. His gaze is fixed, heavy with a quiet suffering that feels more like a settled fact than a sudden pain. The background is a void of deep browns and blacks, pushing his figure forward into the viewer's space. He…

Madonna and Child with Saints and an Angel (detail) -

1528 · Oil

The focus rests upon the soft curve of a mother’s silhouette and the weight of a child held in her arms. In this detail, the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child occupy the center of a sacred geometry. Their presence is framed by the delicate presence of angels, one hovering near the crown of Mary's head, while others occupy the space to the right. Behind them, the landscape rises in…

St Sebastian

1531 · Oil On Canvas · Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Berlinas

Lorenzo Lotto's St. Sebastian, painted in 1531, is not merely a depiction of a biblical martyr; it’s a profound meditation on suffering, faith, and the human condition rendered with an arresting intensity rarely seen in Renaissance art. This oil-on-canvas work, currently residing within the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, transcends simple religious iconography to become a deeply emotive portrait of vulnerability and resilience. Lotto, a master of his craft known for…

Homily of St. Dominic in Recanati (1508) aut. Lorenzas Loto

Homily of St. Dominic in Recanati

1508 · Oil On Canvas · Kunsthistorisches Museum, Viena

The air in the Recanati town square feels heavy with the weight of spoken words. Sunlight washes over the brick buildings, casting soft shadows that give volume to the crowd gathered below. At the center of this communal moment, St. Dominic occupies an elevated wooden pulpit, his figure commanding the attention of the assembly. He is a pillar of spiritual energy, delivering a sermon that seems to ripple through the…

Lorenzas Loto: menininkas

Susanna and the Elders, nutapytas Bergamo periode, yra puikus šio brandumo pavyzdys – žavingas pasakojimas, perteiktas šviesiais spalvomis ir aštriu psichologiniu įžvalgumu į personažų emocijas.

Man with a Golden Paw, nutapytas 1527 metais, yra puikus pavyzdys – žavingas studija apie džentelmeną, laikantį mažą auksinę statulėlę, jos simbolika atvira interpretacijai, tačiau neabeotinai intriguojanti. Sėdėjusiųjų žvilgsnis tiesus ir įtraukiantis, perteikiantis intelektualumo ir tylios kontempliacijos jausmą. Panašiai Portrait of a 37-year-old Man demonstruoja Lotto gebėjimą perteikti asmenybę per subtilias detales – vyro drabužius, jo laikyseną, išraišką akyse – viskas prisideda prie įtikinamo psichologinio portreto.
